Hole In The Rock Trail (4W334)

Distance: 3.1 miles
Approx Running time: 1 hour
Difficulty: More Difficult

The Hole In The Rock Trail runs up hill from the FS-9718 road located north of the town of Liberty to the FS-9712 road above Cougar Spring. This trail is suitable for full size or long wheelbase rigs except the newly cut section of trail near the north end, see description below.

The trail starts off from a switchback on the FS-9718 road with a gradual hill climb up to the top of Nelson hill. At one point just after the start of the trail in takes a short descent into a gully and up the other side which is quite steep, there are two paths the right side being a bit steeper than the left. If wet this short section could become a winch-fest.

The trail continues north steadily climbing while passing through forest and small meadows. There are some areas along the trail that award a view of Mt. Stewart to the west. Near to the north end of the trail at appximately the 2.7 mile mark the trail exits onto an old logging road. Also at this point will be a trail marker pointing to the right. The section of trail to the right is rated as Most Difficult and is newly cut. If you do not wish to attempt this section then stay on the logging road for another .4 mile and exit onto FS-9712.

The new section of trail (indicated in red on the supplied map) is very very tight in the trees. Even with our Jeeps we had to make multiple point turns to get through and still managed to scrape the bullbar on a few trees. This section of trail IS NOT SUITABLE FOR FULL SIZE OR LONG WHEELBASE RIGS!

Getting There: Turn off of Hwy97 onto Liberty road and proceed through the town of Liberty and continue north on Liberty Rd. which will become the Cougar Gulch Rd also known as FS-9718. After approximately 4 miles the road will make a hairpin turn and start up hill. After another 1.6 miles the road makes another hairpin turn to the left. Look for the trail marker for 4W334 on the right. There are also some really cool sandstone formations here to check out.
