Index Wall Overlook Trail
Index Wall Overlook Trail
Running time: Approx 1 hour one way at best
Difficulty: Most Difficult
Distance: 3.0 miles
NOTE: AS OF JULY 16TH 2009 THE INDEX WALL OVERLOOK TRIAL IS CLOSED
Although not a long trail, this one can be very challenging. About half way in is a 150 ft. long tank trap that even at the end of August was about 3 ft. deep in water. A word of caution here, if you plan to try this obstacle, have a friend hook up a winch line to the rear of your rig BEFORE you enter! We tried several times and became bogged down in the mud each time. There are bypasses for this portion of the trail but they are through very tightly forested areas that can be a bit difficult for longer wheel base rigs. We did manage to get an Isuzu Trooper through, although with some body damage, and a stock Jeep TJ with no damage. The rest of the trail is fairly easy, but due to the limited area at the end to turn around I would recommend no more than 6 vehicles go at a time. The view at the end of this trail is spectacular.
Due to problems with irresponsible people throwing garbage off of the cliff at the end of the trail and because the section is technically on state park land, the last 50 yards or so of the trail has been barricaded. Be sure to walk the final part of the trail for the view, it is well worth it.
Getting There:
From Gold Bar take highway 2 east approximately 2-miles and turn left on Reiter road. Follow Reiter road past Reiter pit an old quarry area that is a popular playground for the local 4-wheeling crowd. Reiter pit is on the left, continue straight on the paved road. Approximately 3.65 miles from Hwy 2 there will be a gravel road on the left. Turn up the gravel road and follow it approximately 3.1 miles to a fork, stay right. After about 400yds or so the road will turn to the right, stay straight, entering the tree line, this is the start of the trail. Shortly after the creek crossing the trail forks. Going to the left will take you to the above mentioned tank trap. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS OBSTACLE WITHOUT HAVING A WINCH HANDY!!!!!!! Staying to the right will bypass the tank trap but you will have to follow one of the many paths through the trees to the left to get back on track.
