Moab 2007

Our 2nd trip to Moab is now over and once again we had an amazing trip.

As we had hoped the weather was an improvement over last year with a lot less rain. However the temperatures were at least 10 to 20 degrees cooler on average than we had last year, which meant we didn't get to use our new tube doors to their fullest extent or put the top down as much as we had wanted.

We arrived in Moab on Friday September 28th along with one of the other 3 rigs that would join us on this trip. As the other guys would have been upset if we did any of the real good trails without them and because the weather was threatening we decided to do the Shafer Trial first thing on Saturday. The sun was out and the winds were up. There would be no putting the top down for this run. Stepping out of the Jeep felt like you were getting sandblasted, we stayed in the rig for most of the day.For those not familiar with Moab, the Shafer trail is more a road with a few bad spots and is suitable for stock SUVs and 4-wheel drive is not a necessity. However, the views along the trail are phenomenal and well worth the trip. This makes a good "down" day in between running the hard core trails that Moab is known for.

Our Return trip to Moab after running the Shafer Trail and enjoying the views from Dead Horse Point State Park was via the Long Canyon Trail.  Again a fairly easy road with only a few twisty spots.  The trail is easily manageable by stock SUVs and makes for a good return route to town.  The trail is best known for the huge rock that fell across the road and which you have to pass under.

Sunday the weather was looking better and the temperatures were supposed to be in the mid 80s.  Since this was the first trip to Moab for our friends we opted to run Fins & Things in the Sand Flats Recreation Area.  The Fins & Things trail is a great introduction to wheeling' on slickrock and a really fun trail for those who are new to Moab. The numerous hill climbs and descents show the kind of traction you can get on slickrock.   Rated at 3.5 out of 5 by the Red Rock 4 Wheelers, Fins and Things is a bit more technical and mild lift and bigger tires are recommended.
