Off-road lights modification

Article by: Ed Holnagel

If you are a TJ owner and you have ever wondered why you can't use your factory off-road lights at the same time as your high-beams, then your not alone.  I pondered this problem every time I was wishing for more light.

Here then is a quick and easy modification that requires no tools (at least it didn't for me) that will allow you to use your factory off-road lights regardless of whether you have your high-beams on or not.  It should be noted that it is up to you to check with state and local laws before you do this modification, we make no claims here about the legality of this procedure and just because we show you how to do it is no guarantee that it isn't against the law.  That being said, here is what you do:

For 97-99 model year TJ Wranglers:

  1. Remove the glove box
  2. Behind the glove box locate the fuse block. To the right of the fuse block is two relays. These relays may be partially covered by a duct hose. If you need to, remove the duct hose from its clamp just above the relay block so that you can access the relays.
  3. Remove the relay on the right by pulling straight up on it to extract it from the socket.
  4. Hold the relay with the 3 horizontal pins to the right side. Carefully bend the top pin down as shown in the picture. (click on image for bigger view)
  5. Re-insert the relay into the socket
  6. Replace glove box.

That's it!  Now, turn on your lights, put them on high-beam, then turn on your off-road lights.  You should now have all of them on together.

For 2000-2006 model year TJ Wranglers, the procedure is nearly the same except that the relays are in the engine compartment on the passenger side, just in front of the battery in a black fuse box.

  1. Open Hood
  2. Locate fuse box just in front of the battery on passenger side
  3. Open the fuse box lid (it should hinge towards the front of the Jeep
  4. Locate the relay (it is listed on the inside of the fuse box lid as "fog relay"
  5. Bend the pin down as in the picture above
  6. Replace the relay

That's it!  At this time I do not have a picture of the fuse box relay for the 2000-2006 TJs but as soon as I do I will post it here.
