Pit Overlook

Pit Overlook Trail (4W321)

Distance: 4.10 miles
Approx Running time: 1 to 1.5 hours
Difficulty: Easy to More Difficult

Trail head for 4W319 & 4W321

Unlike the nearby 4W319 trail the Pit Overlook trail has very little challenge.  The 4W321 trail is mostly just an old forest service road that steadily climbs away from the mutual trail head with the Crystal Ridge trail to rejoin the Crystal ridge trail after just a little over 4 miles.  At the upper end you might find the trail a bit slick and muddy if it has rained or the winter snows are still melting off.  As it climbs the Pit Overlook trail runs a narrow shelf road with a view of Hwy. 97 down below.  There are a couple of lesser trails that diverge off of the trail along the way but they quickly meet private fenced property and are not worth the side trip.  As there is little in the way of tight areas the trail is suitable for full size rigs.  At 2.8 miles the trail meets up with a forest service road.  You can exit out at this point straight ahead or bear to the right to continue on the Pit Overlook trail.  After another .5 mile the trail again meets up with the forest service road on the left, continue straight again to finish out the trail.  At the 4.1 mile point the trail meets the 4W319 Crystal Ridge trail.  You can turn left on the 4W319 trail to exit out to the forest Service road or turn to the right to take up the 4W319 trail.

Getting There:

From Hwy 97, turn onto Liberty Road and proceed towards the town of Liberty.  After .8 mile from the highway watch for a road on the right that descends down into a gully and crosses Williams Creek.  There is room here to park RVs for camping.  Turn left after Williams Creek and continue to follow this road until it forks, stay to the right, this spur is the 115 road. After .3 miles there is another fork, stay right again and continue on the 115 road to the end in another .3 mile.  The Pit Overlook Trail (4W321) is on the right and the Crystal Ridge Trail (4W319) is on the left.
