Lost Lake 4W307.1
Lost Lake Trail (4W307.1)
Distance: .9 mile
Approx Running time: 20 minutes
Difficulty: More Difficult
The Lost Lake trail is a short spur off of the Tripod Flats Trail that runs down to Lost Lake. Located just 8 tenths of a mile east of the turn off for the Shoestring trail the Lost Lake trail can be easily missed as there are a group of trees right at the turnoff that can be passed on either side. Pass to the north side of this little stand of trees and you may not see the turnoff for Lost Lake in the woods.
The trail descends steeply down into the valley before turning left and making it's way in and out of the woods and through a few small rock fields on the way to the lake. It would appear that rather than do a lot of maintenance on the trail it ends up getting re routed a lot around dead fall trees and obstacles that end up blocking it. For this reason we suspect that the trail was at one time much easier than it is now. Although not a really tough trail we would rate it at the high end of easy or the very low end of More Difficult. Those that don't like off camber will find quite a bit of it on this trail and because of several sharp turns around the standing and the downed trees and at least one tight S turn through a large fallen tree, this trail is not appropriate for full size rigs.
Once you arrive at the lake the trail continues along the bank and is very off camber. About mid lake the trail really peters out into a quad or horse trail and due to the extreme off camber it is ill advised to try and follow it around to the eastern side of the lake. In fact due to the possibility of ending up in the lake and not having room to turn around we would highly advise that as soon as you get a good glimpse of the lake on your right that you STOP and not go any further.
If you are looking for a bit of a shorter route and easier going we would suggest that you start the Tripod Flats trail from the eastern end to get to the Lost Lake spur. We also suspect that this lake gets very little fishing pressure so pack some fishing gear, a lunch and a small kayak or float tube and plan a day of Jeepn' and fishing. The day we visited the trout were jumping all over the lake. Try a small Rooster Tail or Super Duper and I bet one could get a limit very quickly.
